She was not beautiful. Nor was she charming, a word so often used to describe a woman who was not beautiful but who was, nevertheless, appealing in some ineffable way to her many admirers. There were no admirers. . . .

Sharon L. Jansen is the author of several works on women, politics, and literature, including Reading Women’s Worlds from Christine de Pizan to Doris Lessing, The Monstrous Regiment of Women: Female Rule in Early Modern Europe, and Debating Women, Politics, and Power in Early Modern.

She is also the editor of Mary Astell’s two most well-known works, A Serious Proposal to the Ladies (1694) and Some Reflections upon Marriage (1700).

On Paradise Row is her first work of fiction.
